their desire to discontinue to whip unless the allowance be increased.

The allowance was only recently raised from $4 to $5 per mensen in C. S. 0.

83/94 with which these men appeared to be satisfied. I accepted these

en's resignations and appointed two others in their places. One of the

men who resigned is a married man and a foreigner and I believe that he

was persuaded to ask for a further increase and will soon repent his action.

Turnkey Bullock informs me that he is not prepared to extend his service

nless he receives a bonus in lieu of passage money, but under clause 10

of his agreement he is not entitled to a bonus.

For the above mentioned reasons I cannot

recommend that he should be taken on the permanent staff. His appointment

would thus expire on the 15th August next and he would apparently be

entitled to 3 months notice vide clauses 2 and 6 of his agreement.

The other 3 men still serving who joined under a similar agreement

e 2nd Class Turnkeys Ayres, Foster and Pagnell.

2nd Cl. Turnkey Myres is absolutely useless
